Here is what a naive resolver for the Employee ‘office’ field might look like: The mapping from an externally facing schema to the data storage structures underlying it is called a resolver. But when it comes to fetching data - whether from a database, flat file, or a network service call - GraphQL only knows what we tell it. ![]() GraphQL’s powerful query language and intuitive type system will get us a lot “for free” on the API side. While we might hope that GraphQL could magically do the smartest and most efficient thing, the reality is that it’s up to us to inform GraphQL of the best way to access our data layer. ![]() Trying to Make Fetch Happen: A First Try at GraphQL Resolver In a case like this, how does GraphQL go about fetching the “Parks and Recreation” data structure? Does it fetch the data once and render it in four places? Or does it fetch and re-fetch the same record over and over? The answer: it depends. Another thing to point out is that the same “Parks and Recreation” record is appearing in four places. Not surprisingly, all four of our Pawnee employees work in the same office, but it wouldn’t be hard to imagine an organization with employees distributed across multiple offices. We can query for details about Leslie, such as her ‘name’ and ‘office’, but what if we could also discover connections to other employees, such as her ‘directReports’?īecause Andy, April, and Tom are also Employees, it means that we could also request their ‘office’ field: This might yield a result that looks like: As an example, we’ll imagine a schema for finding information about a local municipality. If you are using GraphQL without something called Dataloader, you may be trading solutions in one part of your app for problems in another.īefore we can dig into what Dataloader is, let’s back up and understand the problem first. Pretty neat, right? Although GraphQL seems to “magically” solve these fetching problems for you, there’s a hidden gotcha. GraphQL solves these inefficiencies by giving the API consumer the power to request exactly the data it needs in a single request. Another is underfetching (also known as the N+1 problem): where an API consumer must make a series of requests to get the data it requires. One of these problems is overfetching: where an API response includes more data than the API consumer actually needs. GraphQL’s creators set out to solve several problems they were experiencing with existing web API methodologies, like REST. It was open-sourced in 2015, and since then, many organizations have adopted it - such as Airbnb, Netflix, and PayPal. GraphQL was developed internally by Facebook in 2012. In this post, I’ll discuss another: GraphQL. You might be asking, what if I don't have debug text or the ability to script? When playtesting levels for Payday 2, a lot of the time we'll get a simple block-out done and then. At such an early stage some floating debug text will do just fine. Most of the time you don't even need animations or even a model to properly test your ideas. The last thing you want to do is build an entire system and find out it sucks. Testing your objectives and complicated RNG elements has to be fast and efficient. Since 90% of Payday levels are hand scripted, it's important we don't waste time building the wrong things. Testing your ideas before scripting them? Wait. (This is a scripting example from our editor, each entity has it's own function) With our main objective in mind, we can construct a simple flow diagram for the heist and start to think about possible dynamic and RNG elements that can be used to create a re-playable experience. These numbers tend to get cut by a third, or in some cases, by half. It should be noted that this time assessment will change once the player has completed the level a few times. Breaking down our main objective into smaller sub-goals that could take about 2 minutes each (this is based on our extensive knowledge of payday 2). We decided to shoot for 10 - 15 minutes of gameplay. Keeping the objective simple and intuitive is important in multiplayer games where players can drop in and out of the experience at any point in time. The main objective was to infiltrate the depot and steal an EMP bomb. ![]() We decided that the theme of the level was a small train depot run by a group of mercenaries shipping large weapons. Making this decision early on helped us create better movement options for the player and focus our efforts towards balancing patrols and objective placement. For the short period of time given to us, we decided to stick to stealth only. There's a lot to go over, so let’s get started!īefore we start drawing or building layouts, we make the call if we are going to create a Loud level (combat only), Stealth level (avoid combat), or Mixed style map. The idea was to create a small heist that took around 10-15 minutes to finish with high replayability. Between the two of us, we figured out the scale of the project based on the needs of our studio. My partner took the role of Level Builder / Environment Artist and I took the role of Designer / Scripter. ![]() This map took 6 weeks to make between 2 people. I'll also break down how we consider using RNG (randomization), and the ways we apply it to objectives and mechanics to keep the level fresh and replayable. I'll start off by saying that Payday's stealth mechanics are not perfect and can be flawed in some areas, but I wanted to focus on the decisions behind the map design, specifically for the heist Murky Station. The skill level of this article is for junior to mid-tier level designers, if you are a senior designer some of this article may sound familiar to you. While parts of this article are specific problems and solutions for Payday level design, I made sure to discuss them in a broader sense. It's the best of the best, and unfortunately, that doesn't come cheap. What you get with the Elite Series 2 is premium quality, premium features, and premium convenience. It's far cheaper to get a basic $40 Xbox controller and an Eneloop battery charger to keep your gameplay topped off, and you can get some of the Elite controller's features using third-party accessories on a budget. The main pitfall of this product is the $180 price tag. The only downside is that tweaking it can take a long time, and it truly is a rabbit hole when you start drilling down into the app's accentuation curve controls and that sort of thing. The additional features are also exciting and numerous, granting players who want a little more from their console experience the options they need to control their experience fully. ![]() For me, that alone makes it worth a look. The charging dock is by far and away the best solution we've seen in gaming for keeping an Xbox controller topped off, with a solid weight and rapid, 1-2 hour charge cycle to get fully topped off. The new Xbox Elite Controller Series 2 is such a vast improvement over the first in every possible respect. Hopefully, the Xbox team and the Windows team can come together to improve the situation there in the future. You're restricted solely to moving around buttons present on the controller itself. I was hoping you'd be able to bind specific keyboard keys, but even that isn't possible. It's unfortunate, then, that this functionality doesn't extend to Windows 10, which doesn't allow for anywhere near as much configuration and system integration. Being able to control the TV volume with your Xbox controller is something I never thought I needed until now. Now, you can also add system-level features to the reverse paddles, including things like Xbox capture and screenshots, and even TV controls if you've set up the IR Blaster on your Xbox One. The upgraded microprocessor in the Elite S2 allows for a greater degree of keybindings than the previous Elite as well. Using a longer joystick, for example, gives you a greater distance away from the joystick pivot for making small precise aiming adjustments without having to sacrifice speed.īeing able to control the TV volume with your Xbox controller is something I never thought I needed until now. There's also a tension control key, which lets you increase the amount of force you have to deliver to move a thumbstick, which can be a massive boost for precision with the right tweaks. If you're a neat freak, it may drive you crazy.Īnother area of concern for many has been the shoulder buttons, which suffered from similar wear and tear problems on the previous Elite. In fact, the controller is generally difficult to keep clean, with various tiny notches and grooves that are prone to dust accumulation. The materials in general just feel great to the touch, even if the soft matte black plastic attracts fingerprints and smudges like mad. The fact the grips wrap around the whole handles instead of just on the back gives it a more pleasant feel in hand. I'm incredibly confident in what Microsoft has put together here. Without a time machine, there's no way to know if they won't warp over time, but the difference in quality between the original Elite and the S2 is readily apparent. The stuff the original Elite got right has been refined, and the stuff it got wrong has been fixed. I was unable to lever it off using a guitar pick or even a blunt razor (but still, it's not something I recommend you try at home!) Rather than a simple shape mold, the new rubber grips are fixed with a new chemical bonding process, and it shows. That said, I didn’t run through the entirety of the campaign again, which took me around 40 hours the first time as I set out to complete all of the quests that were available. Finally, I was curious to see how the game has improved since my original playthrough. ![]() Secondly, I’ve been on the fence about purchasing the above-mentioned DLC, having completed the main game last July, and considered that replaying it could help persuade me one way or another. My motivation for revisiting The Outer Worlds and composing some thoughts on it at this late date are threefold: First and most simply, it’s a game that never received a SwitchRPG review and I feel that it more than deserves the attention. Thus, in many ways a review of The Outer Worlds on the Nintendo Switch feels almost as relevant as it did a year ago when I set foot in the dystopian worlds of the Halcyon solar system for the very first time. On top of all this, if you watched Microsoft’s E3 presentation last month-Xbox Game Studios now the parent company of Obsidian Entertainment, which seems to be a common theme judging from a couple of my past reviews-you may have caught wind of a hilarious reveal trailer for the highly anticipated sequel, The Outer Worlds 2. Peril of Gorgon landed on the eShop this past February while the latter has yet to receive a concrete release date on Nintendo’s platform but is expected to arrive before the year’s end. In addition, the developers’ collaborative effort with publisher Private Division has begotten the first of two brand new story expansions in the form of the separately purchasable DLC, Peril on Gorgon and Murder on Eridanos, respectively. The game has seen a series of patches, each promising to enhance some of the visual and performance issues that plagued it upon release. On the flip side, Virtuous, the development company that handled the task of bringing over Obsidian Entertainment’s vision to the Switch, has been hard at work during the past thirteen months. ![]() From scenery gutted of detail, fuzzy resolution, and horrendous draw distances to lots of pop-in and low frame rates, the general consensus when my copy arrived in late June, almost a year to the day of my writing this, was that The Outer Worlds on the Nintendo Switch remained a solid game but one that was best experienced on more powerful hardware. For many reviewers and gamers, the result wasn’t up to snuff. While the essence of the game, beloved by so many, remained mostly intact and was received as positively as ever, much fuss was made about the various downgrades that were required in getting this version to perform adequately on the Switch. The reactions, to put it mildly, were somewhat mixed. Then, in the summer of 2020, the Switch port of this unique and ambitious next-gen RPG finally arrived. At the time, the heralded first-person shooter/role-playing game, created by the minds who introduced the world to the first two Fallout titles, surprised nearly everyone when the Switch version was announced to follow upon the heels of its Windows, Xbox One, and PS4 counterparts only months after its late 2019 debut on those platforms. It’s been just over a year since The Outer Worlds launched on the Switch. ![]() |
